Amazon, the world’s biggest -commerce company has announced that it will be building a 4 billion rand ($280 million) head office in South Africa.

The campus will occupy 70,000 square meters of land in Cape Town. The project is expected to be complete in 3 to 4 years.

The new offices will house all Amazon staff and executives and data centres.

Amazon’s history in South Africa dates back to 2004 with a customer service unit that has been operating since 2010.

In 2020, Amazon announced that it would hire an additional 3000 people in South Africa, almost doubling its local staff to 7000 to provide 24 hour support to customers in North America and Europe.
