The N3 between Johannesburg and Durban has been blocked in both directions by truck drivers’ protests.

The truck drivers are calling for the deportation and unemployment of foreigners in South Africa.

All Truck Drivers and Allied SA Secretary General Sifiso Nyathi said they were protesting the use of foreign truck drivers by South African trucking companies.

He said they had planned to march to the bargaining council to demand that the trucking industry have zero percent of foreign nationals working.

“We are strongly demanding all freight to have zero percent.”

Nyathi said there are calling for 100% and nothing else, stating that the trucking job was meant for and should only be given to South African drivers.

He said driving was not a scarce skill and they have been saying this for years.

“We will keep fighting this, we have said it four years ago and we will keep saying it because it is a fact and truck driving is not a scarce skill.

He said he had seen places where around 500 South African truck drivers were seeking employment but were being overlooked by companies.
