Movement for Democratic Change Alliance Spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere says the state has decided that instead of addressing genuine concerns around corruption, they will imprison those who expose corruption and those who protest against it.

Mahere said contrary to the claims of permanent secretary for Information Nick Mangwana the state is not punishing lawlessness but victimising those who are brave enough to expose it.

Mahere said Hopewell Chinono and Jacob Ngarivhume were denied bail while Obadiah Moyo who was involved in a corruption scandal was granted bail and the state never opposed.

She added that the state is using Covid-19 lockdown to tighten their grip on power shrinking the democratic space thus regulations introduced this week have more to do with repression than saving the people.

Mahere condemned the government saying nothing has been done to deal with the deepening health crisis, hospitals are still not ready after several months to prepare, there have been zero accountability for Covid-19 donations.

Mahere said the state thrives on working ordinary citizens for the benefits of elites hence its time to correct the imbalance as power lies in the people.

Moreover, Mahere said Harare Mayor Herbert Gomba was arrested and denied bail last week on allegations of criminal abuse of office.

Mahere said Gomba stands ready to face his day in court and answer to these allegations but the real issue is the selective application of the rule of law as the ZANU PF elites are granted bail while opposition are made to suffer.
