A National University of Science and Technology (NUST) graduate in Applied Mathematics, Ray Meki Banda has authored a 288-page textbook for Advanced level Pure Mathematics.
Banda’s textbook, titled “A ‘level Pure Mathematics 1,” is awaiting approval from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
In an interview with CITE, Banda said the book seeks to ignite the love and understanding of mathematics among students.
“The book is self-explanatory and can be used by both students and teachers. It is objective-based and detailed, covering all pure A ‘level mathematics topics for both Cambridge / ZIMSEC or any non-Cambridge Examination Board,” he said.
“It is a book that ignites excitement for students doing pure mathematics, as it also elaborates on sound foundational definitions, and background information on how these topics are used in the practical world apart from Mathematics, e.g. Engineering, Statistics, Systems Modelling, Trend Analysis, Underwriting in Actuarial, Decision Analysis, Population management systems so as to motivate students in knowing the fields in which mathematics is more applied at.”
Banda said he was motivated to write the textbook after realizing that many students find it difficult to love and understand mathematics. He also noted that the pass rate in A ‘level pure mathematics has been low in recent years.
“This book acts as a bridge to curb such gaps, so as to prepare students to excel in pure mathematics and as well as have solid foundation when going to tertiary education, after excelling well in their A ‘level since the textbook is tailor authored to make one a Guru in pure mathematics,” he said.
Banda is also a member of the Oxford Press Educational Research Forum (ERF) and an Actuarial Analyst student in AAC online Board.
