Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resigned as a member of parliament with immediate effect.

In a statement on Friday, Johnson, 58 accused the parliamentary probe into the “Partygate” scandal of forcing him to quit.

Johnson was being investigated by the Commons Privileges Committee if he misled the Commons over Downing Street lockdown parties.

He said the report was full of inaccuracies and reeks of prejudice, adding it was clear the committee was “determined to use the proceedings against me to drive me out of Parliament”.

Johnson’s resignation now triggers a by-election in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency.
