Harare mayor Jacob Mafume has refused efforts by government to force the council into agreeing to the Pomona waste-to-energy deal.

Adressing the media at Town House yesterday, Mafume said council will not be part of the Pomona Agreement stating that the deal is not clear, against the residents’ will and is financially straining city Council ‘s budget.

Mafume said the government should suspend the 30-year agreement between the local authority and Geogenix BV as it will not pay using devolution funds.

This comes after Local Government minister July Moyo said devolution funds must be used to pay the US$1.5 million bill so far in the US$344m deal

Meanwhile, July Moyo issued a statement saying the City of Harare will pay towards the deal for services rendered in May and June at the Pomona waste management energy plant.
