South Africa’s President has received the Johnson Johnson covid-19 jab at the Khayelitsha District Hospital in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Ramaphosa said he was terrified at first however the vaccine is a real milestone.

“At first I was a bit terrified of this long needle that was going to be embedded into my arm, but it happened so quickly, so easily, it was just a prick on my flesh and I really did not feel much pain,” Ramaphosa said afterwards, describing the first vaccinations as a “real milestone” for SA.

The first batch of 80,000 Johnson & Johnson single-dose inoculations will be used in the rollout of the vaccine programme.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been shown in extensive trials to be safe and efficacious and will protect health-care workers from illness and death from Covid-19.
