The South Africa National Defence Force (SANDF) will soon deploy soldiers on the streets to provide support to police after 24 trucks were burnt in targeted attacks over the past few weeks.

The truck attacks are being led by shadowy groups that want employment of 100% local truck drivers in South Africa. The attacks have cost millions and have resulted in the death of at least 5 truck drivers since 2019.

Yusuf Abramjee of Crime Watch says soldiers are needed to help police in securing roads against truck attacks and this is legal under the disaster management act.

He added that the deployment of soldiers would come as a relief to truck drivers who work in constant fear of being attacked.

eNCA reported that their sources in the SANDF say the request by the police is being considered and soldiers could be on the street in a matter of days.

The mandate of the soldiers would be broader, including providing with police assistance during the festive season.
