Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has died after the helicopter he was in crashed in a foggy, mountainous region of the country on Monday.

Raisi died at age 63.

Iran’s foreign minister and several other officials also perished in the tragic accident.

Search teams located the wreckage in East Azerbaijan province.

The helicopter crash comes weeks after Iran launched a drone-and-missile attack on Israel in response to a deadly strike on its diplomatic compound in Damascus.

Raisi became president in a historically uncompetitive election in 2021.
