Mikhail Gorbachev (91) who became the final leader of the Soviet Union ending the Cold War has died.

He was the last leader of the Soviet Union and the man credited with ending the Cold War.

He was a Nobel Peace Prize winner and one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century who changed the course of history.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov  and the Central Clinical Hospital said in separate statements that Gorbachev died after a long illness.

Gorbachev is survived by a daughter, Irina, and two granddaughters.

Tass news agency reported that Gorbachev will be buried at Moscow’s Novodevichy cemetery next to his wife.
