Former Botswana President Ian Khama has denied being a fugitive in South Africa, saying he is not running away from justice in his home country.

Khama is currently in SA after he fled the neighbouring country.

He has been slapped with the unlawful possession of firearms in Botswana.

Khama has since described the charges as trumped up and part of the persecution he has suffered at the hands of Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi.

Khama maintains that all his firearms are licensed.

“This whole thing about the weapons, the weapons that I have I looked after by the intelligence service. So isn’t ridiculous that the same organisation whose personnel look after my weapons are the same ones who want to charge me for having the same weapons.”

He added that his family is being haunted by Masisi and his government.

“Masisi vowed about a year, year and a half ago that my family must be driven out of Botswana. They must not get any employment opportunities in the country. They must be locked up and even eliminated”.
