Fourteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of Zimbabwean national Elvis Nyathi in the Diepsloot.

Seven men appeared before the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 19 April on charges of murder, kidnapping and four counts of assault, robbery with aggravating circumstances and extortion.

Only seven were charged as there was insufficient evidence for the other seven arrested.

Nyathi, who was brutally attacked and set on fire in Johannesburg’s Diepsloot last Wednesday by a vigilante mob for not having a passport, was buried at Bulawayo’s Umvutsha cemetery on on Saturday.

The matter was postponed until 22 April to give the accused an opportunity to appoint legal representation.
