Will Smith has been banned from the Oscars gala and other Academy events for 10 years after slapping Chris Rock.

The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Science, which organises the awards ceremony, met virtually on Friday to discuss disciplinary action.

In a statement, the Academy said the 94th Oscars had been overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behaviour exhibited by Will on stage.

“The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from 8 April 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” said president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson in a statement.

Smith resigned from the academy on 1 April and has issued statements apologising to Rock, the Oscars producers, nominees and viewers.

In response to the ban, Smith said; “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”
