CCC President, Nelson Chamisa is set to make massive changes to his leadership team. Chamisa has reached a key point in his political career as the team that he will appoint now will make up a big portion of his planned government.

Meeting with Chin’ono

Chamisa met with popular award winning journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono today at Chin’ono ‘s Harare home.

Chamisa is believed to have offered Chin’ono the CCC spokesman position at the meeting.

Chamisa favours Chin’ono in this position due to his high work rate and international connections. The outspoken Chin’ono has been a vocal campaigner for voter registration and has been instrumental in crafting the CCC’s .

For Chin’ono, taking up the position of CCC spokesman will be a difficult decision as he will now have to operate within party protocols. In his current position, Chin’ono enjoys a position of power as he has no boss.

Major Reshuffle

This is the first major change that Chamisa will make since 28 May 2020. On that day, Chamisa removed Daniel Molekele and replaced him with Fadzayi Mahere as his spokesman.

Weaknesses

  • Chamisa has been criticized for running the CCC without leadership structures. However, his reluctance to make appointments was understandable as he needed to stabilize the party and avoid a fights over positions ahead of the 26 March bye elections.
  • Chamisa has been operating with a team that is not fit for purpose in key portfolios. The structure of the MDC was huge and bloated and does not align with his stated intention to appoint a small cabinet with no deputy ministers.

Options for the gaps

Chamisa is going to focus on key portfolios in his leadership team. His goal is to create a young and vibrant team that will differentiate the CCC from the old MDC Alliance.

Chamisa has a number of options available to him when making new appointments for the CCC leadership team.

Vice Presidents

Chamisa has previously expressed his preference for a large number of Vice Presidents. Chamisa is likely to appoint five Vice Presidents:

Mahere, Karenyi Kore, Hwende, Khumalo and Ncube.

Secretary General

Biti will take over as the SG of the MDC Alliance.

Treasure General

Kuda Musasiwa will take over as the Treasure General in the new party.

Spokesman

The appointment of Hopewell Chin’ono in this position will stabilise the party and give the party a stable

Timelines

  • The CCC will need to draft a new constitution.
  • After the appointment, there will be a process of appointing provincial structures.
  • The last step will be the appointment of the standing committee and the National executive.

Conclusion

  1. Fireworks are about to begin in the CCC as Chamisa will have to remove non performing comrades around him. This is important in the key Vice Presidency, SG, Chairman, Treasure General and President’s office.
  2. Chamisa is likely to make appointments from outside and key people to watch are Hopewell and Kuda Musasiwa.
  3. The appointment of Mahere as one of five Vice Presidents will be seen as progressive as she is likely to attract young female voters.
