South Africa is set to buy water from the Zimbabwe National Water Authority for the newly established Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone.

Speaking during the state of the province address, Limpopo Premier, Stan Mathabatha, said the province has made significant progress towards acquiring water resources from Zimbabwe.

According to the Limpopo Water Management Area North Reconciliation Strategy, the Energy and Metallurgy complex can purchase about 30 million cubic meters of raw water from ZINWA.

The Musina Makhado Special Economic Zone, which sits on 11 500 hectares of land, will have a new city and various industries such as a 1300MW coal plant, iron, steel, ferrochrome plants, agroprocessing, hotels, and retail centres.

Water was identified as a major problem from the inception of the project.

The long term water solution for the project is the construction of a R14 Billion dam along the Limpopo River in Musina.
