Teachers Demand Payment To Invigilate ZIMSEC Exams

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) secretary-general Raymond Majongwe, together with leaders of several unions representing teachers have vowed that their members will not invigilate Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) examinations which start on 1 December.

The unions say, the examination body should have a separate arrangement with them.

The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), in a letter dated 23 November 2020, addressed to the Public Service Commission and Primary and Secondary Education ministry, said:

“We also officially inform you that our members will not invigilate Zimsec examinations because they do not work for that parastatal.

“If ZIMSEC wishes to secure their services, it should negotiate with them for remuneration commensurate with that duty.

“We stand ready to facilitate that dialogue before the examination session starts in earnest on December 1.”

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) said its members were still incapacitated and were also not in a position to invigilate the examinations.

Both unions, PTUZ and ARTUZ, advised their members to report for duty, with the former saying teachers should only work for a maximum of three days a week while the former has encouraged its members to attend school once every week.

Public Service Commission and Primary and Secondary Education ministry, together with ZIMSEC are yet to respond to the demands.
