Constitutional lawyer Professor Lovemore Madhuku says the ruling by the magistrate Ngoni Nduna to bar Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono is a wrong decision that is subject to appeal

Magistrate Ngoni Nduna ruled that Mtetwa should stand down from representing journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and directed that the Law Society of Zimbabwe should cancel her licence for “scandalising the court”.

Speaking to Simba Chikanza of Zimeye, Madhuku said the ruling would not survive scrutiny on appeal.

“The right of an accused person to be represented by a lawyer of choice is one of the most fundamental rights in a democratic society,” Madhuku said.

“I believe the court’s decision to bar Beatrice Mtetwa from representing Hopewell Chin’ono will not survive an urgent review by the High Court.” Said Madhuku.
