Denmark based ZPP Director of research, Macylen Mpofu Jensen, tells the gripping story of her life in this zoom call with Pardon Gambakwe.

Macylen said she was born and grew up in Highfield, Glen Norah, and also spent time in Morningside, Zimbabwe.

Her father, a ZAPU General Secretary, was in and out of jail before and after independence. However, after independence his close relationship with Joshua Nkomo got his family into danger with the new ZANU-PF government.

One day, Macylen and her sister were found by their gardener playing with grenades which had been left by the ZANU PF government in the family garden with the intention of harming the family.

This is when her father and Joshua Nkomo fled Zimbabwe to Botswana on foot.

The pair’s driver was delayed and as he was arriving to pick them up at the agreed point, his car blew up! Clearly, the delay saved their lives.

Macylen told how she grew up in Denmark, going to school, learning a new language and the difficulties of getting a job as a black person.

In 1998, Macylen decided to return to Zimbabwe, with her Danish fiancee.

She stayed in Zimbabwe for 9 years until 2007 when she decided to go back again to Denmark.

During this time, her mother had became a strong ZANU PF supporter.

Her experience in Zimbabwe made her decide to join the Zimbabwe People ‘s Party.

Macylen said she did not join the MDC after her attempt to contribute were met with insults in their whatsapp group.
