South African Airways employees have until close of business on Friday to decide on retrenchment packages offered by the airline’s business rescue practitioners.

More than 4,000 staffers could be out of jobs.

Meanwhile, Unions Numsa and the SA cabin crew association are adamant they will not sign a deal that will see the airline liquidated.

The business rescue practitioners issued management and unions notices to terminate contracts of employees but, the unions are against the proposed retrenchments.

The SAA pilots association said the offer is not ideal as its violating the employees rights.

It limits the employees ability to come back to the company after the 30th of June.

“We feel that under normal retrenchment you have up to two years to be invited back to the company and also transfer business which gives the employees rights to return to the business”.

This comes after the government denied an additional R10-billion in funding for the airline.

The business rescue practitioners say the airline can’t be turned around without more money.
