In a significant escalation of political tensions, a prominent Zimbabwean opposition leader and former Finance Minister has been detained by police, along with several activists and journalists.
The arrests occurred while the group was campaigning against the controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3—proposed legislation that seeks to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term and alter the process for electing the head of state.
Details of the Arrest
The opposition leader was apprehended in Mutare’s central business district while conducting door-to-door campaign activities. He was transported to Mutare Central Police Station, where he remains in custody.
The Charges
According to reports, he has been charged under the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (MOPA) for allegedly failing to notify police of a public meeting. The charge comes amid growing criticism that the law is being used to stifle political dissent.
Current Status
As of Sunday, March 22, 2026, the former minister is still being held. He is expected to appear in court for an initial hearing on Monday, March 23, 2026.
