WATCH LIVE as Gambakwe unpacks the CAB3 bribes being handed out by Mnangagwa ahead of the parliamentary vote.
In April 2026, Mnangagwa Associate Wicknell Chivayo pledged $3.6 million to Zimbabwe’s 360 parliamentarians ($10,000 each). After public backlash and ruling party infighting, he withdrew the offer and instead redirected $5 million to his party’s provincial structures.
He also gave luxury cars and cash to a few specific MPs (two from the opposition CCC, one from ruling ZANU-PF), with each receiving a Toyota Fortuner and $50,000. Critics say this was bribery to influence a parliamentary vote.
Chivayo gave even larger gifts to religious leaders, including a $1.2 million Rolls-Royce to one bishop and $5 million cash to his church, plus 82 other vehicles. He also donated cars and cash to boxers, a widower who lost his family in an accident, and media staff (though some media gifts were blocked).
Presidential adviser Paul Tungwarara gave a $300,000 wedding gift and a Toyota Land Cruiser to a government critic as a condition for reconciliation.
Totals (May–June 2026):
-
Wicknell Chivayo: 86 vehicles + ~$10.79 million cash
-
Paul Tungwarara: 1 vehicle + $300,000 cash
-
Combined: 87 vehicles + ~$11.09 million cash
Key context: These lavish gifts happened during debate on a constitutional amendment. Zimbabwe’s ethics rules ban MPs from accepting gifts over $4,500 if meant to influence votes.
