More than 300 people have been killed since rains, the heaviest in six decades, wreaked havoc in Kwazulu Natal and surrounding region at the weekend, destroying homes and infrastructure.

More than 41,000 people have been affected.

President Cyril Ramaphosa visited families who have lost loved ones in KwaZulu-Natal province.

Ramaphosa declared the region a state of disaster. He is set to unlock relief funds for the affected.

Authorities said they established 17 shelters to accommodate more than 2,100 displaced people.
