Serial rapist and killer Bright Zhantali, charged with raping and killing nine women in and around Marondera was on bail for myrder committed last year.
Police are investigating how he managed to win the bail.
Zhantali was arrested last year in Harare on charges of murder after he allegedly raped and killed whose corpse was found floating in lake Chivero.
Zhantali (30) appeared before Magistrate Ms Patience Chirimo facing rape and murder charges and was remanded in custody to April 6.
Six of the women he murdered were strangled, two he allegedly killed with axes and one was battered on the head with a stone.
Prosecutor Reward Sitotombe told the court that Zhantali also stole cellphones and any cash his victims had on them before killing them.
