Atleast ten shops have been burnt to ashes at Munyaule Market in Lusaka.

The Lusaka City council has released a statement confirming the sad news.

Below is the Full statement :

Lusaka City Council fire brigade last evening responded to a fire, at around 20:04 hours after receiving an anonymous call, requesting the fire brigade to respond and attend to a fire at Lusaka’s Munyaule Market which is situated along Lumumba Road at City market.

The fire swept through 10 (Ten) shops causing extensive damage to property. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the fire emanated from garbage that was dumped near the makeshift shops and set ablaze.

Upon arrival at the scene, the fire brigade managed to suppress and extinguish the fire in express time using two deliveries from two pumps.

The fire was discovered by a shop owner at Munyaule Market who alerted his colleagues after noticing that a shop had caught fire.

As the Local Authority we would like to urge members of the public to stop disposing off waste indiscriminately but more importantly to desist burning waste as this can prove to be disastrous.

No fatalities were recorded during the fire.
