The International Cricket Council has banned Zimbabwean cricket legend Brendan Taylor for three-and-a-half years, just days after the former Chevrons captain released a statement admitting he had failed to immediately report a corrupt approach by an Indian businessman.

Taylor represented Zimbabwe in 284 international matches between 2004 and 2021, scoring 9,938 runs with 17 centuries.

He accepted the sanctions after admitting to various breaches of the Anti-Corruption Code while a separate charge of breaching the Anti-Doping Code was levelled against him for a positive test result for the stimulant Benzoylecognine, a cocaine metabolite, in September last year.

Taylor wrote in a social media post that an Indian bookie and businessman had offered him spot-fixing. Taylor also told that when he met that bookie, he took cocaine and later he was blackmailed for this reason. Taylor had expressed apprehensions that the ICC could ban him for several years.

Taylor further wrote – I was told a plan to start a T20 league in Zimbabwe and was also given 15 thousand dollars to come to India. We have not received money from Zimbabwe board for 6 months and there is no possibility of getting it in future. So I left for India, where I attended dinner with the businessman and his associates.
