Senior military officials in Guinea Bissau, a former Portuguese colony, revealed that they foiled a coup yesterday, after the recent coup in neighboring Guinea Conakry.

Guinea Bissau is a former Portuguese colony that became independent in 1974 after a long war of liberation.

Since its independence, the country has experienced four coups, the rest of which occurred in the year 2012.

On Thursday, President Umaru Sissoco Embalo left for a 48 hour working visit to France and some soldiers decided to plot the coup.

Other soldiers who are part of the plot went and snitched or reported it to higher ranking generals, and it was foiled upon the arrest of the coup d’etat plotters.
