There are wild celebrations on the streets of Guinea after a group of elite soldiers staged a coup against President Alpha Conde this week.

The new military Junta moved fast and released 79 opponents of the deposed Conde.

The military Junta also moved to assure mining investors. Guinea has the world’s largest deposits of bauxite and contributes the world ‘s third largest deposits of aluminum.

Guinea has a long history of military coups and had no civilian government before 2010, since gaining independence from France in 1958.

The country had its first democratically elected President, Alpha Conde, in 2010. Conde refused to step down when his two terms ended and instead changed the constitution to allow him to rule forever, resulting in the coup.
