Coup leaders in Mali have promised to supervise the setting up of a civilian transitionional government.

This will lead to new democratic elections.

Ordinary citizens in Mali have welcomed the forced resignation of the President, Ibrahim Baubaca Keira on Tuesday and many have taken to the streets to celebrate the military intervention.

Condemnation

However, regional and international organizations have condemned the coup and asked the military to restore constitutional order.

The US, AU, ECOWAS and the United Nations have all condemned the coup. ECOWAS has cut cross border financial flowsĀ  and have imposed sanctions on the coup leaders.

Greviances

Mali citizens have been on the streets for the past 3 months citing security issues in the North, where armed groups have taken over and poverty and unemployment, which affects over 42% of the population.

Fears

Analysts fear that democracy in Mali could be badly affected by the latest Coup, which is the sixth since 1991.
