The Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba has resigned with effect from 27 November 2019. He will also step down as a DA Councillor.

This follows major race issues within the main SA opposition party, the DA.

The DA has been rocked by racial issues as the traditional non-white members feel that the party is compromising its values to attract African voters. This powerful group has been pushing to remain influential in the DA.

Mashaba had promised to resign from his position if the Helen Zille was elected as DA Federal chairperson. Zille was elected this weekend as Federal Chairperson.

The DA has been struggling to gain black voters and is losing white voters as race politics is gaining prominence in South Africa.

Herman Mashaba is known for his hair products company Black like me and entered active politics in recent years as part of the DA’s push for black voters.
