On 8 May 2019, the High Court ruled that Nelson Chamisa is not the legitimate leader of the MDC.

The judgement was delivered by Justice Edith Mushore. She said that the Movement for Democratic Change had not properly followed its own internal processes in appointing Chamisa as vice-president in 2016.

The legal challenge against Nelson Chamisa was launched by Elias Mashavire who was the organising secretary for the party’s Gokwe district at that time.

Today, the MDC Alliance is set to appeal at the Supreme Court, after having lost at the High Court.

The MDC seeks to overturn the judgement. If the Supreme court rules in favor of the Elias Mashavire group, Nelson Chamisa risks legitimacy and MDC will also lose legal claim to the party properties particularly the Harvest House.
