BULAWAYO – The allure of the betting shop has claimed another victim, but this time it’s a domestic trust that has been shattered. A 33-year-old woman from Nketa 8 suburb, Simeleni Dube, has been sentenced to community service after gambling away US$700 entrusted to her by her husband.
The court heard that Dube’s husband had given her the cash for safekeeping, only to discover later that the coffers were empty. Driven by the hope of a quick win, Dube allegedly took the family savings to a local betting house and lost every cent.
Western Commonage Magistrate M. Munsaka sentenced Dube to 105 hours of community service, sparing her jail time but leaving her with a criminal record and a furious spouse. The incident has become the talk of the town, serving as a cautionary tale about the grip of gambling addiction in Zimbabwe’s tough economy.
Prosecutors revealed that Simeleni was entrusted with US$700 by her husband before spending it on card games at a Bulawayo betting shop. After initially lying about lending the money, her husband reported the incident to the police, leading to her arrest.
During court proceedings, Dube was convicted after admitting her guilt and was sentenced to six months in prison, wholly suspended on the condition she completes 105 hours of community service. Details, such as specific dates of the events, are not available in the cited reports.
