WATCH LIVE: Four More Bodies Recovered From Kariba Nehanda Disaster

11
  • August 11, 2026 – The Mbuya Nehanda ferry (operated by RIDA) capsizes on Lake Kariba while travelling from Kariba town to Chalala Fishing Camp. The vessel carries approximately 144 passengers, five crew, and an unconfirmed number of children. A State of Disaster is declared, mobilising military resources, rescue divers, and aircraft.

  • August 14, 2026 – Forty‑four victims are identified by next of kin.

  • August 15, 2026 – In the morning, 22 bodies are recovered, bringing the death toll to 68. Later that evening, 3 more bodies are found, raising the toll to 72.

  • August 16, 2026 – Eight bodies are recovered in the morning (toll: 80). That afternoon, four more are found near Long Island (toll: 84).

  • August 17, 2026 – Eight more bodies are recovered, raising the toll to 92. Families hold daily vigils at Kariba Hospital.

  • August 18, 2026 – First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa arrives in Kariba to comfort grieving families. She meets Taurai Taruvamba, a 36‑year‑old woman who rescued seven people (including her own two children) during the disaster. The death toll reaches 93 by 11 AM and later 94. Thirty‑nine additional victims are identified by next of kin on this day.

  • Ongoing – Seven people remain missing. Search operations continue, hindered by difficult weather and water conditions. No plan exists for procuring replacement boats. All provincial roads remain in severe disrepair, with no funds available for repairs beyond pothole patching. The Karoi–Siakobvu road is especially problematic—a 200‑kilometre stretch takes roughly four hours to traverse due to washed‑away bridges and gravel surfaces.
