Faniel Viriri provide a snippet of his upcoming book:

He provides a personal perspective on “Uncle Roland,” whose real name is Rolen Muchegwa. Viriri contrasts the public’s perception of “Uncle Roland” as a “controversial figure” and “blesser” with his own memories of him.

He recounts their friendship, which began in 1997 in the Western Triangle neighborhood of Highfields, Harare (referred to as “Fiyo”). Viriri was a journalism student at the time, and Rolen was a tenant in the same house as his best friend, Eddie Paradza.

He paints a picture of their shared youth, discussing the people they admired (like Peter Pamire and Tendai Mupfurutsa), their love for Jamaican Dancehall music, and their pastimes, which included going to nightclubs and dating.

He reveals details about Rolen’s life at the time, including his job as a clerk at Old Mutual and his origins from Zvishavane. He also mentions that Rolen was nicknamed “Chivanga” (scar) by those who knew him then.

He highlights Rolen’s early sense of style and how his expensive clothes, including a leather jacket lent to musician Nicholas Somerai for a music video, made him a “hero” in their community.

He talks about the cultural scene of Highfields (“Fiyo”) in the 90s, describing it as the “mecca of Dancehall,” and mentions popular sound systems and dancers of the era.

He concludes by stating that Rolen has always been a person who attracts attention and promises that there is more to his story in the book.
