In an exclusive sit-down with DJ Ollah 7, Zimbabwean boxing champion Charles Manyuchi opens up about his extraordinary journey one defined by humble beginnings, resilience, controversy, and an enduring passion for the sport.
Born and raised in rural Zimbabwe, Manyuchi’s inspiration came from his father, himself a boxer, who planted the seed of ambition that would later grow into an international career. He recalls how his professional journey began modestly, fighting for as little as $10 a match, before reaching a stage where he could command purses of up to $25,000 for a single fight.
But Manyuchi’s rise was not without turbulence. Alongside celebrated victories came whispers of controversy, including accusations of juju (mangoromera) claims he dismisses but admits weighed heavily on him during key moments in his career.
The boxer also opened up about his personal life struggles, including a divorce that drew public attention. He spoke candidly about the Masvingo High Court ruling, which ordered him to pay $18,000 in damages, acknowledging the challenges of balancing personal and professional pressures.
Beyond the ring, Manyuchi has sought to give back to the sport that shaped him. He proudly highlighted his efforts in establishing a boxing academy in Zambia, a move aimed at nurturing young talent and ensuring the sport continues to thrive in the region.
