Political activist Linda Masarira has sparked debate after calling for mandatory DNA testing at birth in Zimbabwe, arguing it would protect men from being deceived into raising children who are not biologically theirs.
In a statement shared online, Masarira said paternity fraud unfairly burdens men emotionally and financially, and can contribute to rising male suicide rates in the country.
“This is not about division,” she said. “It’s about truth, fairness, and accountability. Mandatory DNA testing will ensure the right fathers take responsibility and protect children’s rights to know their true lineage.”
She warned that deception within families erodes trust and can damage mental health, adding that Zimbabwean law already requires biological fathers to support their children.
Masarira’s remarks have divided opinion on social media, with some praising her call for transparency, while others argue it could destabilise relationships and create new conflicts.
The proposal has reignited wider discussions on family law, gender relations, and mental health in Zimbabwe.
