The Southern African Development Community (SADC) on 4 January 2025 held an extraordinary meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the Organ Troika to discuss the post-election political and security situation in the Republic of Mozambique in preparation for the SADC Organ Troika Summit scheduled for 5th January 2025.
The meeting was chaired by Honourable Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation of the United Republic of Tanzania in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Ministerial Committee of the Organ. The Incoming Chairperson of the MCO, Honourable Nancy Tembo, MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malawi, and Outgoing Chairperson of the MCO, Honourable Mr. Mulambo Hamakuni Haimbe, SC, MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Zambia led the delegations of the Republics of Malawi and Zambia respectively.
Honourable Ambassador Kombo highlighted the need to strengthen regional cooperation to support the Republic of Mozambique to address the post-election political and security challenges which have been characterised by violent protests, leading to loss of lives and damage to private and public property.
The Chairperson of the MCO said since the onset of the post-election protests in the Republic of Mozambique, SADC has consistently been seized with the developments to find appropriate ways of addressing the situation. He cited, as an example of SADC’s efforts, the statement by the Chairperson of the Organ, Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania urging political stakeholders in Mozambique to remain calm, exercise restraint and refrain from acts of violence while calling for peaceful and constructive dialogue as the preferred avenue to address existing grievances.
The report of the meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the Organ Troika will be discussed at the Organ Troika Summit to be chaired by Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, in her capacity as the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
