The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) has issued a statement dismissing a public notice circulating on social media as fake.
The notice, which claims to be signed by Potraz Director General Dr. G. K Machengete, states that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has approved the licensing of Starlink, a high-speed satellite internet service provider without the knowledge of Potraz, and that Potraz is attempting to reverse the contract awarded to businessman Wicknell Chivhayo’s IMC Communications.
Potraz has since denied the authenticity of the notice has warned the public against generating and spreading false information.
The regulatory body has urged the public to be cautious and to verify information through official channels to avoid spreading misinformation.
In a statement, Potraz said: “Potraz would like to advise the public that the notice below dated 28 May 2024 and purportedly signed by Director General Dr. G. K Machengete is FAKE. We also sternly warn the public to desist from generating and peddling fake news.”
