The Zimbabwe revenue authority has lost a court case in which they fired an Mr Philip Mujuru, in 2018, after Mujuru refused to explain the source of funds in his NMB bank account.

ZIMRA now has to pay Mujuru his salary for 5 years and reinstate him to his original position.

In a judgement that was handed down on 11 December 2023, Judge L Hove found that ZIMRA acquired the bank statement of Mr Mujuru illegally after misrepresenting the purpose to NMB bank. This was found to be a violation of his privacy.

The Judge also found that ZIMRA could not apply the life style audits retrospectively as the policy had came into affect after the date on which the funds in Mr Mujuru’s account were deposited.

The judge upheld an earlier decision of the labort court for Mujuru to be reinstated. If reinstatement was no longer possible, Judge Hove ordered that Mujuru be paid damages agreed between the partied and quantified by a labour court officer.
