Kenya’s Giant telecommunication network, Safaricom PLC has officially switched on its network in Ethiopia’s capital city Addis Ababa.
Its official launch on 6th October 2022 was graced by Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed and his counterpart, Kenya’s President William Ruto .
Safaricom PLC started operating with a staggering 200,000 customers in just 2 weeks.
Safaricom Ethiopia is currently employing 650 staff of which 450 represent local employees.
Safaricom’s entry into Ethiopia ends a monopoly under state-owned Ethio Telecom in the tightly-controlled country of more than 110 million people.
The Ethiopian government had announced plans last year to end the state monopoly in the telecoms sector, a key plank of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s economic reform agenda.
