Miss South Africa, Lalela Mswane has been crowned as the second runner-up at the Miss Universe pageant.

This follows weeks of controversy about her participation at the pageant held in Israel.

The 24-year-old from KwaZulu-Natal beat the odds by attending the pageant amidst the Israeli-Palestine conflict.

The South African government pulled its support over this issue.

Mswane made the top five, along with Miss India, Harnaaz Sandhu, who crowned Miss Universe, Miss Paraguay, Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines.
