South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has today provided an update on the Omicron virus.

Key Points for discussion 

1. Omicron is responsible for most if the infections in Gauteng and is spreading across the country.

2. Not sure if it causes more severe illness.

3. Investigating if current vaccines are effective against Omicron.

4. Vaccines are the most effective tool.

5. 41% of adults have received at least one vaccine dose.

6. Anyone who is not vaccinated must immediately get vaccinated.

7. South Africa is looking at booster vaccines.

8. Health workers are being given a Johnson and Johnson booster dose.

9. Vaccination will now be a condition for access to workplaces.

10. Vaccination will be compulsory for certain locations and activities.

11. South Africans must continue to wear their masks.

12. Meetings must be held outdoors.

13. Avoid mass gatherings such as conferences, end of year parties must be held virtually.

14. The National Coronavirus task force met yesterday.

15. A decision was taken to keep the country on level one.

16.  Vaccines are widely available and ways of managing the pandemic must be found.
