Jolidee Matongo the son of a Zimbawean Immigrant has been elected as the new mayor of Johannesburg.

Matongo was nominated and elected on Tuesday morning.

Matongo was nominated by the African National Congress (ANC).

Matongo previously served on the mayoral committee for finance.

“I am thankful for the honour and privilege to serve the people as Mayor for the next coming months,” said Matongo.

The mayor position became vacant after the untimely death of former Mayor Geoff Makhubo.

Makhubo succumbed to a Covid-19  related illness at age 53. He previously served on the mayoral committee for finance.
