South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, tonight addressed the country as the number of infections continue to rise.

Key points from the address

1. SA has overcome two devastating waves of the coronavirus.

2. A new and deadly virus is spreading.

3. SA is seeing a massive resurgence. A third wave is under way across the continent.

4. We now have the delta variant that was first identified in India.

5. The delta variant is more transimissable and is twice as contagious.

6. People previously expossed to the beta variant do not have full protection from the delta variant.

7. The delta variant is more common in children.

8. We therefore need to take extra precautions.

9. The third wave could last longer than the first wave (15 weeks) and the second wave (9 weeks).

10. Complacency comes at a high price.

11. Based on scientific advise, the following measures have been put in place :

12. The country is moved to adjusted alert level 4.

13. Additional restrictions are necessary for the next 14 days. .

14. All gatherings are prohibited, political, social and social.

15. Funerals attendance may not exceed 50 people.

16. Night vigils and after tears are not allowed.

17. Curfew from 9pm to 4am.

18. The sale of alcohol is prohibited.

19. Travel out of the province for holiday is prohibited.

20. All schools should be closed by Friday.

21. Most businesses should operate as usual as long as they observe protocols.
