Thousands of South Africans have flocked to the village of KwaHlathi in South Africa’s Kwazulu-natal province in search of what they believed to be diamonds.

The people travelled from across South Africa to join villagers who have been digging since Saturday after a herd man who dug up the first stone on an open field, which some believe to be diamonds.

Meanwhile, the Minerals Resources Department is sending a team to Kwahlathi to investigate whether residents have discovered a massive trove of diamonds.

The KwaZulu-Natal government is appealing for calm after Kwahlathi residents and people from neighbouring towns flocked to the area to mine.
