The former finance minister, Tendai Biti says the economy of the country has worsened.

According to the Zimbabwe statistics agency, the overall inflation rate, year on year in March, is 240%.

Biti says corruption is behind the fall of Zimbabwe’s economy.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa recently promised a serious crackdown on the road.

In the past Zimbabwe witnessed some ministers and government officials being arrested and fired. But critics like Biti say this is not enough to boost the economy.

“There’s a meltdown, if you want to see the health of the country, look at exchange rates, just look at the exchange rate of any country. In Mozambique during the war years we knew things were bad, because the currency had collapse. In Zambia, when things were bad again, we knew things were bad, because the kwacha had fallen, in Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe in 2007 2008, we knew things were bad because the Zimbabwean dollar had collapsed,” said Biti.

The MDC Alliance vice president further revealed that between January and March, the economy has collapsed by 80%.

“Poverty levels are now high and families are starving,” added Biti.
