Paul Kagame, the president of Rwanda, grew up in exile in Uganda, where his parents took him as a young child to escape the violence between the Hutu and Tutsi during the period leading up to the 1959 independence of Rwanda from Belgium.
Kagame studied at the Makerere University in Kampala before joining the forces of Yoweri Museveni who overthrew the Ugandan president, Milton Obate in 1986.
Kagame became Museveni’s chief of intelligence, and gained reputation for incorruptibility and discipline by enforcing a stringent code of conduct.
On 10th of June 1989, in Uganda, Kagame married Mira Mogi, a Tutsi exile living in Nairobi.
Kagame asked his relatives to suggest a suitable woman for him and they recommended Nyira Mogi.
Kagame travelled to Nairobi and introduced himself, persuading her to visit him in Uganda, and after the visit to the first time, Mogi was in love with him because of Kagame ‘s goal of returning the Tutsi to Rwanda.
The marriage between Nyira Mogi and Kagame was blessed with four children, namely:
1. Ivan Cymoro Kagame was born in 1990 and is a private equity investor. He holds Bachelor degree in Managerial economics from the Pace University and an MBA from the University of South Carolina.
2. The only daughter of Kagame is , Ange Kagame who was born on 8 September 1993. She attended Dana Hall Preparatory school in Wellesley Massachusetts. She has a bachelor’s in Political And Afeican studies from Smith College and a Master’s in International Affairs from Columbia University. She is married to Bertrand Ndengeyingona.
3. Ivan Kagame is the third atheletic child of Kagame. He was raised in Kigali. He obtained a Masters degree from Williams College in 2013. He is a professional basket ball player.
4. Brian Cyizere Kagame, is also a sports personality. He featured in a soccer match between Rwanda and Morocco in February 2021.
