Committe to Protect Journalists Africa Program Coordinator Angela Quintal says the detention of investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono is yet another example of Zimbabwe’s increasing intolerance toward the press and those who expose corruption allegations about the country’s ruling elite.

Speaking to SABC news, Angela said Instead of detaining those responsible for stealing public funds, Emmerson Mnangagwa’s security forces would rather employ strong-arm tactics to silence the messenger.

Angella said the government is claiming that Hopewell was arrested for attempting to overthrow Emmerson Mnangagwa with full support of the so called Western forces while he was arrested for exposing the government.

Angella said Cyril Ramaphosa the AU chairperson has been tasked to ensure that people like Hopewell are released from jail.
