One South Africa Movement Leader Mmusi Maimane has welcomed the recent Concourt ruling saying it will not only change the country’s political landscape but also sets on course democracy for South Africa.

The South African Constitutional Court ruled out the country’s Electoral Act as unconstitutional as it does not provide for adult citizens to be elected to the National and Provincial Legislatures as independent candidates.

In a judgement passed this Thursday morning, Constitutional Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga said he could conceive no reason that the limitation is justified this the electoral act is unconstitutional, and the appeal must succeed.

A South African civil society group, New Nation Movement, brought up the case which argued that the act stifles the right to exercise individual political choices.

The court has suspended the judgement for 24 months to give the parliament some time to make the necessary amendments.
