WATCH LIVE: Mnangagwa Removes Chief Ndiweni

Chief Ndiweni has been removed from his position as Chief while he is away in the UK.

The Ndiweni clan of Ntabazinduna has appointed an acting chief to assist Inkosi Nhlanhlayamangwe Ndiweni, who is currently in the United Kingdom, while maintaining that he remains the substantive chief of the area.

The saga surrounding Felix Nhlanhlayamangwe Ndiweni is a complex mix of traditional succession disputes, criminal prosecution, and high-stakes political friction with the ZANU-PF government.

Timeline of the Ndiweni Chieftainship Dispute

  • August 2010: Paramount Chief Khayisa Ndiweni passes away. A dispute immediately begins over his successor. Joram Ndiweni (the eldest son living in the UK) claims the title via primogeniture, while the clan supports Felix, asserting it was their father’s will.
  • June 2014: Felix Ndiweni is officially appointed as the substantive Chief Ndiweni by then-President Robert Mugabe. Joram continues to petition the government against this appointment.
  • July 2017: In a local traditional court ruling, Chief Ndiweni orders the banishment of a villager’s wife for adultery. When she refuses to leave, he allegedly instructs his assistants to destroy her garden and kraal fence.
  • May 2019: Tensions with the government peak. Ndiweni resists the eviction of a local family from Ntabazinduna Mountain and publicly calls for increased international sanctions against the administration.
  • August 2019: Ndiweni is convicted of “malicious damage to property” for the 2017 incident and sentenced to 18 months in prison. He is granted bail pending appeal later that month.
  • November 30, 2019: President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially removes Felix Ndiweni from the chieftainship, citing the breach of traditional succession rules (not being the firstborn).
  • December 2019: Ndiweni challenges his ouster in the Bulawayo High Court, calling it politically motivated and a violation of his constitutional rights.
  • 2020–2021: Ndiweni travels to the United Kingdom for medical treatment. In December 2021, a warrant of arrest is issued for him for allegedly violating his bail conditions by remaining out of the country.
  • April 2022: The Ndiweni clan issues a formal statement reiterating that they still recognize Felix as the substantive chief and that the government has no authority to dethrone a traditional leader.
  • April 2026 (Current): The clan appoints an acting chief to manage local administrative affairs in Ntabazinduna while Felix remains in the UK. They maintain this is a temporary logistical measure and not a replacement of his title.

Key events for today

President Trump has made a major announcement on Iran.

Duration and scope: A “double-sided” two-week ceasefire starting immediately. The US and Israel suspend all bombing and offensive operations against Iran. Iran ceases its “defensive operations” and agrees to allow safe, complete, and immediate passage of commercial ships (including oil tankers) through the Strait of Hormuz, coordinated with Iran’s armed forces.

Israel’s inclusion: A senior White House official confirmed to CNN that Israel has explicitly agreed to pause its own bombing campaign during the two-week window.

Trigger: Iran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz (which it had largely blocked since the war began, spiking global oil prices). Trump stated this was the key condition for the pause.
