A Zimbabwean senior forensic investigator, Mercy Zihove, was fired by Standard Chartered Bank South Africa after her business account received R100,000 from an elderly romance scam victim.

The Transaction: In January 2023, a victim transferred R300,000 to several accounts, including R100,000 to Zihove’s panel-beating business (“Mike Angies Workshop”). Zihove quickly transferred R90,000 of it to other accounts.

Employee’s Defense: Zihove claimed she did not verify the funds because she trusted her workshop manager, who said it was for a vehicle purchase for a friend in Dubai.

Bank’s Position: The bank argued that Zihove, with over 10 years of experience as a certified fraud examiner, should have flagged the suspicious transaction, exposing the bank to reputational and financial risk.
